Allergic Contact Dermatitis

A type 4 allergic skin reaction causing itchy, red, blistered patches, triggered by repeated exposure to an allergen.

What is it?

Allergic contact dermatitis is an allergic skin reaction that occurs 12–72 hours after exposure to an allergen. It presents as redness, heat, swelling and pain on the scalp or affected area. It is classified as a type 4 hypersensitivity reaction.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Redness, heat, swelling and pain
  • Patches of skin that are itchy, red and blistered
  • Reaction occurs 12–72 hours after exposure
  • Sun sensitivity may also be present

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Repeated exposure to small doses of an allergen
  • Overreaction of the body's autoimmune system
  • Many different allergens can trigger this condition

Treatment Options

  • Avoid contact with the triggering substance
  • Hydrocortisone cream from GP or pharmacy
  • Antihistamine medication
  • Topical steroids if needed
