Female Pattern Hair Loss

A genetically driven condition causing progressive thinning across the mid-frontal scalp, often worsened by hormonal changes.

What is it?

Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) generally presents as a loss of hair volume to the mid-frontal scalp. The parting appears to be getting wider and hair overall feels thinner. It is also known as androgenetic alopecia in women.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Widening of the hair parting
  • Thinning around the parting area
  • Reduced volume in a ponytail
  • Overall thinning of hair throughout the head
  • Psychological impact — low self-esteem

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Genetically driven — involves activation of hair follicle androgen receptors
  • Miniaturisation of the hair follicle resulting in progressive hair loss
  • Caused by a combination of hormones, ageing and genetics
  • May be exacerbated by low ferritin (iron) levels or thyroid dysfunction

Treatment Options

  • Minoxidil (topical treatment to slow hair loss)
  • Topical steroids from GP
  • Light therapy
  • Wigs or hair transplants
