What is it?
Folliculitis is a skin condition in which hair follicles become inflamed, typically due to a bacterial infection. It can occur anywhere on hair-bearing skin, though it commonly affects the scalp.
Signs & Symptoms
- Itchiness within the affected follicle
- Burning sensation
- Redness and inflammation around the follicle
Causes & Risk Factors
- Bacterial infection of the hair follicle
- Folliculitis decalvans (a more severe form)
- Can occur on any hair-bearing skin
Treatment Options
- GP referral for appropriate treatment
- Antibiotics may be prescribed depending on severity
