Male Pattern Hair Loss

The most common form of hair loss in men, driven by genetic and hormonal factors causing gradual thinning at the temples and crown.

What is it?

Male pattern hair loss (MPHL), also known as androgenetic alopecia, presents as hair loss at the temples or crown of the head. Hairlines may recede to form an "M" shape, or a single spot of baldness may develop at the crown.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Hair loss at the temples or crown of the head
  • Receding hairline forming an "M" shape
  • Awareness of thinning after puberty — usually no physical symptoms on the scalp
  • Psychological impact — low self-esteem, depression and feelings of unattractiveness

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Combination of genetic and hormonal factors
  • DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) causes changes in hair follicles on the scalp
  • Affected follicles produce progressively smaller, shorter and lighter hairs until they stop producing hair entirely
  • Inherited from either or both parents

Treatment Options

  • Minoxidil (topical treatment — slows hair loss if taken continuously)
  • Finasteride (oral medication — reduces levels of DHT)
  • Wigs or hair pieces
  • Micro-pigmentation
  • Hair transplants
