What is it?
Traction alopecia is hair loss resulting from repeated or constant pulling on the hair. It typically appears as areas of hair loss to the front and sides of the scalp, punctuated with broken hairs. The pulling force is usually from hairstyling techniques such as tight ponytails, braids, cornrows or dreadlocks.
Signs & Symptoms
- Areas of hair loss, often at the front and sides of the scalp
- Broken hairs in the affected area
- Inflammation, soreness, stinging or itchiness of the scalp
Causes & Risk Factors
- Repeated or constant pulling on the hair from tight hairstyling
- Tight ponytails exerting extreme pulling force on the hair and scalp
- Afro-Caribbean styling techniques — braids, cornrows, dreadlocks
Treatment Options
- Stop tight hairstyles immediately
- Anti-biotic from GP if the area is inflamed
- Early intervention gives the best chance of recovery
